Finale NotePad
This is a downloadable entry level notation software that works well for creating student compositions. While there was a charge for some versions, there is a version currently available for free.
Noteflight
This is another free entry level notation software. The difference is that it's all online. Terms of use state that the user must be at least 13 years of age to open an account.

This is a website with free theory lessons and exercises. It's great for brushing up on note names, interval identification, key signatures and other basic music theory concepts. There is also a downloadable app available for purchase. There is no cost to use the site, although they do ask you to consider donating if you find the site helpful. An app version is also available for purchase for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
